Tango

As a child I studied ballet and tap, performing in local shows and school events. However I did not dance for a long time after that, until late in 2007 when I joined a friend at a tango lesson in Chiswick. I dabbled enthusiastically for a couple of years, then, bizarrely, during a month-long trip to Beijing early in 2010 I suddenly fell completely in love with the dance and endeavoured to push myself to excel at it. The endeavour is still in process and is expanding to other fields: since 2011 I have taken courses in contemporary dance with City Academy & Rambert Dance Company, contact improvisation, circus arts (static trapeze and chinese pole) with Circus Space & Hangar Arts Trust, and yoga during a renewed zest for this musical movement.

I have been lucky to have the opportunity of performing tango demos for charity events and private parties, and assisted with teaching tango classes at such events. Whilst working with him in the music & dance duo 'moontangles' between summer 2010 and Spring 2012 my main dance partner was Alfredo Martin Espindola who teaches tango in London.

Alice Mary Williamson + Tim Sharp |
I currently perform with pianist Tim Sharp - we play together in the band Ama Bazar, and as part of our gig set we often come out of a song to dance. Tim's dancing is very playful yet perfectly balanced, experimenting with throwing our weights away from one another to create tensions, resolving beautifully and dynamically. Much stemming from his practising the japanese martial art Aikido in a previous life.

'Shipwreck Circus' performed by students of AirCraft Circus |
In April 2012 I joined the Circus Arts/Aerial 1 course at Circus Space in Hoxton (aerial trapeze, static trapeze and corde lisse), and from there enrolled on static trapeze and chinese pole courses at Aircraft Circus, part of the Hangar Arts Trust in Woolwich. I performed on a mini chinese pole on a rocking pirate 'ship' as part of Greenwich Circus Festival in December and am looking forward to continuing chinese pole courses in 2013, with the hope to perform solo in Easter & Summer events.
